Stephen King and method of Archaeology

In is writing (which I mentioned here ), King talks about his method of creating stories: the method of archeology. For him, he says, the stories are indeed "remnants" or "fossils" that are already fully trained, somewhere in his mind. When he had an idea, he saw just a piece of this relic beyond. His job is then to identify, extract it without breaking it.

It compares the aggressive plans to trying out a fossil land with a jackhammer. We therefore suggest to keep away.

The beauty of the King's explanation is that we can understand in many ways. Those most likely to metaphysics will understand that the stories are things that have a fully trained independent existence, that the stories we are coming "from somewhere" and it just write over the pen to the do arise.

Given my training, which included courses in archeology, the parallel push me in another direction of interpretation. You see, archeology, when you learn truly emergent tip of a relic, you do not get to dig immediately. You first try to understand what you've discovered. A wall? A dome? A house? In terms of literature, you begin to define your idea: it seems to be the officer, there are four important characters ...

Armed with your estimates, you start to dig carefully, suddenly you'd be wrong and you would have made a temple for a hut. In literature, you try to explain your history to see which way it goes ...

And that is the important moment: is digging to clear the remnants, that you do over the pen or with a plan, you will see if you mess up or not ... if the end of the remnant that pointed not reaching two or three other points that you already emerging findings without trying to reach (or try, but wrong) ... if your story is not police rather fantastic ...

Whether you believe that history is a construct of your mind or a gift of the Muses, one way or another technique archeology insists on one thing: you must try to understand the shape of history and not him not print one. We must remove the remains of earth without breaking it in pieces and paint it red to try to make it prettier.

The analogy is worth being kept in memory! :)
