physical accomplishments
No member of AA is not seeking to discourage material success. We do not want, either, to enter into discussion with those who are still passionately believe that the satisfaction of basic natural desires is the main purpose of existence. But what we are certain is that no class of people the world has done more obviously wrong that alcoholics trying to live according to this formula.
In the field of security, prestige and romance, we asked more than our share. When we seemed to succeed, we drank to the most beautiful dreams yet. When we were frustrated, even partially, we drank to forget.
But all our efforts, however well intentioned they were, were paralyzed by the lack of humility. We missed the angle of view that we have shown that the formation of our character and spiritual values should come first, and that the material satisfactions were simply by-products and not the main purpose of life.
